CD Series "Crazy Edition"

"Atavistic Music" - Extreme Jazz... or Classical?
With Franz Hummel, Alexander Suleiman (Cello) and Yojo (Piano) have constructed a new style of improvisation that sounds like an extreme, free form of jazz but is, at the same time, related to various developments in avant-garde music.
Each piece bears a characteristic title that, by the radius of its associations, makes it quite unique.
The soloists have had sensational success with their audiences. They have christened their new "natural" style "Atavistic Music", the single pieces simply "Atavistics".
This is an extraordinary, new CD Album in the TYXart series “Crazy Edition”.

Atavistic Music - Extreme Jazz

A while ago, Yojo said that he wished he could draw staves in the starry night sky, so as to create a completely strange, cosmic music. This poetic metaphor inspired us to some new thoughts about the form, style and sound of musical genres.

Functional harmony, has become so engraved within us, that attempts to escape from it have, against all expectation, only laid down and cemented new rules, which ultimately once again restrict our musical freedom. The "nature" of music seems to be relentless in this respect.

In our everyday life, which is strangled by laws and orders that regulate even our most trivial decisions, and as victims of the surveillance mania that drags its poisoned paths into our innermost capillaries, we need areas of retreat, free trade zones for contemplation, emotion and unsystematic thought in order to be able to breathe.

This is why Alexander Suleiman, Yojo Christen and I have constructed a musical style for which unbounded imagination and virtuosic instrumental technique are required, but which also allows the freedom to "grasp" the instrument as if it had just been invented. Here sounds, structures and passages evolve, which are only marginally influenced by our diverse musical experience.

On the one hand, such an "atavistic" approach to music opens up a perspective onto a "chaos" of sounds and unleashes a liberating ecstasy of independence, on the other hand, it structures the unknown and new with our trained skills. All intellectual concepts are thus obsolete. It is extraordinary that our "Atavistic Music" is more satisfying and beautiful, the more imaginative and technically skilled the musicians are and the more they try to restrict these qualities. Could it be that this new style of playing and improvising already bears the cell of the human desire to structure, and is it not perhaps this same phenomenon that makes us fantasise the most incredible figures in the plaster of an old wall?

For us, one of the most important results is that it is not only the interpreter who generates the creative process but also the alert listener, and old habits only make themslves felt after one has listened to a recorded episode over and over again.
