Georges Barboteu - Centenary - "Jeux"

2024 celebrates the centenary of the birth of an extraordinary artist – Georges Barboteu. A musician who, like many others, was certainly an excellent instrumentalist, but did not content his artistic abilities in a single art, with a single instrument.
The son of the principal horn of the Algiers Opera orchestra was also the student of an uncompromising father whose walls of the villa in the small port of Lapérouse still resound with his outbursts of voice.
Precocious in all, both physically and musically, this young man with strong stature quickly established himself as a talented hornist. But he not only learned the paternal instrument, he also devoted himself to composition by studying the harmony and rules of writing music.
Hervé Joulain now embodies a great desire for many years by presenting to the listener what was so long this kind of “grail” in the course of a hornist. A challenge that is not only technical but also musical. May this interpretation be the first on a path now open.

"By writing these few lines about Georges Barboteu and the works chosen in this «tribute» recording, my joy is at its peak. For a lifetime, Georges Barboteu never ceased to show me respect, affection and undoubtedly a certain admiration, proof of which is that he dedicates to me in 1993 one of his most intimate, profound and interesting work, his “Triptyque” for horn and string quartet.
As I entered professional life as solo hornist at the Radio France Philharmonic Orchestra, I always keeping good relations with Mr Barboteu. Later it is the Bordeaux Symposium in 1995 that will offer the opportunity to play the “Triptyque”, written 2 years before. Previous readings took place, in order to check the material (still handwritten for about a year), and change some details in the score.
This CD with two works entitled “Jeux”, this was to become the album’s title, and why not an excellent opening piece. ..." Hervé Joulain

Mainly first recordings of works by the great composer and hornist Georges Barboteu, interpreted by Tatiana Chernichka, the Leopold Mozart String Quartet and Hervé Joulain.
